September and Warm Fruit

Just had lunch out at the raspberry bushes and grape vines. It's 87 degrees and sunny. Do you know what sun-warmed grapes smell and taste like? Incredible.

Chuck Might Be Chuckita

Lately, we've been watching the woodchuck working on Blake's landscaping fabric. Tearing off little bits, then running away.. back under the deck.

Now, she's trying to save time and drag the whole dang thing under there.  See below.

It's Chuck Time

The wildlife inventory continues to grow this summer. I've been here almost 28 years and have never seen a woodchuck in my yard. So, Chuck joins the red squirrel on the first-time list this year.

Technically, I guess he's Blake's chuck... as it seems he's vacationing under his shed. With the Chipmunk and Rabbit Families already living there, the shed must have gone condo.

Fairport Hail Storm - July 21, 2010

I was at a client's house in Fairport this afternoon, just ready to leave when the rain started, then the wind gusts, bringing sheets of rain and hail. We decided I should wait a few minutes for the storm to pass.

I'm so glad I did - we never get weather this cool in Palmyra. This video was taken on my HTC Droid Incredible in HD. I just wish I'd thought to start recording sooner!

The hail flew all the way to the back of the garage. Hope this video is sufficient evidence for my insurance company. All in all, a great afternoon!

Erie Canal Eagle

I've looked for an eagle in Wayne County for a long time. I've read they've been spotted near Sodus Bay - surprisingly enough around Eagle Island - but haven't seen one myself. I finally saw my first "in the wild" eagle by driving to Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware last year.

Then, we saw a few flying high at Montezuma when we made a hopeful trip there last fall. The best part of that trip was seeing the Osprey perched high over Route 31 in Savannah (see earlier post).

So finally - after seeing a picture of an eagle near the Widewaters on the canal in Port Gibson in the local papers, we happened by at the right time and saw him flying around with his entourage. He never landed, that I saw - and eagles don't seem to fly in a straight line. So these pictures were the best I could do - this time! Of course, it's arguably still not Wayne County, but Ontario County stole it from us, so it almost counts. I'll be looking for him again.

Vulture Tree

These turkey vultures have been flying over my house and neighborhood for several years. Tonight we took a closer look.

This vulture stood still holding its wings wide for several minutes. There were others in the sky coming in and it looked as though he was directing traffic.

There are at least ten turkey vultures in this one tree.

Chincoteague Swing Bridge

Found this on Flickr via Twitter. Putting it here because I like it.
